KZ400

Here is my KZ400. I have had this bike for a few years now and I have done a ton of work to it. Bought the bike for $350 and spent who knows how much on it. I will try to post about the various upgrades. But just for a short list. The bike was torn down to the frame.

The bike is a 1978 KZ400 B1 originally a 400cc vertical twin (now it is a 440cc).

  • Engine rebuilt with 440 head and jugs.
  • Electronic Ignition, new coil, wires
  • Dellorto slide carb and custom intake.
  • New chain and sprockets.
  • Modern controls and Thomaselli throttle
  • New gauges
  • KZ650 gas tank
  • Custom seat

have a 1978 kz400 now and pondering a carb rebuild because the diaphram’s are torn, you upgraded your carbs? what size are they? any suggestions?

I actually switched to a kz440 top end, so head, jugs and pistons. I was running a single 34mm delorto slide carb but I am currently swapping that out for some standard kz440 carbs with an airbox. I had to modifying the openings on the kz400 airbox to accept the larger carbs but so far that is it.

I would stick with them, fix the diaphragms and then sync the carbs. Did you put on an after market exhuast and pod filters? That would require larger jets.
